Governor Hassan Joho was officially declared winner of the Mombasa gubernatorial contest and subsequently issued with a certificate by the IEBC on Saturday.

Mombasa IEBC Returning Officer Nancy Kariuki named Joho winner of the race with 221,177 votes ending speculation of how he had performed during Tuesday’s election. His main challenger, Suleiman Shahbal of Jubilee managed to get 69,515 votes while Senator Omar Hassan got 43,787. Former Nyali MP Hezron Awiti scooped 4,709 while Kadu Asili’s Daniel Kitsao managed a paltry 1,670.Joho addressed his supporters shortly after being issued with the certificate.“Those who called me a D-, I am the governor today,” he said amid applause from the crowd. The county chief scored grade D- in his KCSE exam.Earlier in the day, Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa had ordered IEBC Mombasa branch to issue the certificate to the county chief.“That is a sign of inefficiency,” he said at a press conference in Mombasa.“The government is fair. Any winner must be given their certificate.”He said delays “give government a bad name”.There was tension at Bandari College on Saturday morning after the IEBC postponed Joho’s declaration as governor.Ms Kariuki said the Commission needed time to verify the results.
