Asian airline, Emirates, could soon launch flights to Mombasa if negotiations between the county government and the airline is anything to go by.
If the talks succeed and the flights introduced, Mombasa will become the airline's second destination in the country.
At a meeting hosted in Dubai on Thursday, Governor Hassan Joho and the airline's officials discussed prospects of opening Emirates Airline's 151st destination at the Coast.
Fly Emirates currently only flies to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
The launch of flights to Mombasa will help bolster the country's tourism industry which is recovering after a wave of terror attacks in Nairobi, North Eastern and parts of the Coast.
"This morning, I had a meeting with Adnan Kazim, the DSVP Strategic Planning, Revenue Optimisation and Aero-political Affairs and Trevor Chong, the Vice President, Route Planning and Economics to discuss the prospect of opening Mombasa as the 151st Emirates destination at the Emirates group office in Dubai," Mr Joho said on his official Facebook account on Thursday.
"Mr Adnan shared key insights of the Emirates experience which allowed us to finalise the process of aligning key priorities that will enhance the Mombasa experience as destination of choice."
"We discussed the various efforts that Mombasa has made in making it clean and green for residents, visitors and ensuring the safety of visiting airline crew."
He said the county government had also embarked on attracting visitors from new markets including inviting investors from the hospitality industry to set modern hotel facilities in Mombasa.
Mombasa is one of Kenya's towns with a rich culture and the introduction of the flights will jack the tourism sector which has never attained a growth rate recorded before the 2007/08 Post-Election Violence.
In Governor Joho's company were the Executive Committee members for Finance and Environment, Hazel Koitaba and Lewa Tendai Mtana, and the county's Economic Advisor, Ahmed Farah.
