Mombasa county governor Hassan Joho could be in trouble ahead of the 2022 elections after it emerged that Coastal leaders are plotting his downfall.
A section of Coastal leaders have apparently abandoned the move to support Joho's 2022 presidential bid and are now planning to support the candidature of Kilifi governor Amos Kingi instead of Joho.
The tussle between Joho and Kingi is viewed as a supremacy battle between the Mijikenda and the Arab which has dominated the Coastal politics in recent years.
Those pushing for a Kingi candidature are saying he is the right man since Mijikenda is the populous community in the region compared to the few Arabs which Joho aligns himself with.
Kilifi North lawmaker Owen Baya stated that they will support one of their own.
"The Mijikenda community controls almost 90 percent of the Coast vote and we have decided that it is Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi who will lead us to the next government in 2022. Let us support," said Baya.
