Over 1,500 Economic Processing Zone (EPZ) workers in Mombasa sacked eight months ago will receive pay Governor Hassan Joho has said.
They will receive salary they missed for the months they spent out of work following their sacking by their employer the governor said on Friday.
Besides, they will resume work, but at a date to be communicated later he said.
Mr Joho assured the workers their interests would be taken care of.
"We successfully negotiated a back to work and/ or compensation agreement for over 1,500 employees of Mombasa Apparel (EPZ) Unit Two who had been laid off for the past eight months," he said in a statement on Friday.
The close to 2,000 workers were sent home after EPZ management led by Financial Controller Pankaj Mehta, at the time, claimed the workers' contracts had ended.
Attempts by the County Assembly to intervene and block the workers' sacking did not materialize at the time they were sent home.
Mr Mehta who was summoned before the Assembly to explain the circumstances under which the workers were sent parking said: "The contract ran from January to June and was renewed up to December when it ended. There is no law prohibiting me from ending a contract."
MCAs had promised to follow up the matter and find a lasting solution to it.
On Friday, Joho led a high-powered delegation from the county government to the EPZ offices where he met top management officials.
A brief meeting that included the governor, the EPZ managers, and the worker's representatives resolved that the employees' resume work and be paid salaries missed.
Joho addressed the workers assuring them the county government would champion their interests.
