Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has accused the Jubilee administration of lacking the political will to fight the drug menace in the country.
Speaking in his new office at Treasury Square in Mombasa on Tuesday, Joho said he had achieved more in the war against narcotics than President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.
"My conviction to fight this menace has never changed. The county is currently rehabilitating more than 600 youths through the Hassan Joho Foundation. What have they done?" asked Joho, as quoted by the Standard.
He said the National government has been sidelining the county administration despite its persistent calls for both governments to unite in efforts against the illicit trade.
"Mombasa county inspectorate has arrested more drug addicts than the police in the last four years, even without support from the government," said the ODM Deputy Party leader.
The governor challenged the Jubilee administration to demonstrate commitment beyond "political opportunism and lamenting".
“You don’t solve such a big problem like this by politicizing it. You don’t play politics with people’s lives,” said Joho.
He said for the vice to be eradicated, all the stakeholders including political leaders, security agencies and the government should work together.
