Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has accused the Jubilee government of politicising the fight against drug abuse.
Speaking at Treasury Square Garden during the launch of the voter registration exercise on Monday, Joho said if the State was serious about ending the menace, it would have closed down the well-known drug dens in the county.
“I believe the Jubilee administration is giving more powers to drug barons to transact businesses and not targeting the real culprits,” said Joho.
“If you have goodwill, close Magodoroni, Godown, Mikanjuni and other dens,” he added, as quoted by The Star.
The outspoken governor further accused the Jubilee administration of exaggerating the number of drug addicts in the county, saying it came up with the high figure of 100,000 to suit its political agenda.
Joho was responding to Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa who said police are investigating the governor's link to a suspected drug baron in Mombasa.
Joho's sentiments were reiterated by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir, who faulted the Jubilee administration for accusing of involvement in the illicit business.
“If Joho is who you say he is, why have you not arrested him?” he asked.
