Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has said he rejected the security guards assigned to him by the government due to an alleged ploy to use the guards to plant guns at his residence.
Speaking in Mombasa during a voter registration rally, Joho said he received reports indicating there was a scheme to use the guards to spy on him.
"I have rejected the State bodyguards because I had reliable information Jubilee was planning to plant illegal guns in my residence and spy on me using the officers. I would rather protect myself than allow these people to stay around me," said Joho, as quoted by the Standard.
Joho also attributed the current conflict between him and the government to a section of local leaders from the Coast, who gave wrong information that they had guns, saying they had betrayed them.
"It's true some local leaders are behind our current conflict with the Government after claiming that we have guns. They have betrayed us," he said.
This comes barely a week after Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar had called for investigations to uncover the number of guns Joho and his friends possess.
