[Photo: Ali Hassan Joho]Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho officially opened a 2-day Conference organised by the County's department of Trade, Energy and Industry.Dubbed “Small and Medium Enterprises, Growth and Opportunity” the event took place at the Sarova Whitesands hotel, Thursday."We as a county have played a key role in providing an enabling environment for SMEs to thrive. We have automated most of our business process like e-business permits and the e- Construction permits that have reduced on the time clients use in payment of licenses," said Joho.He indicated the county government of Mombasa had also modernised retail market through the construction 230 modern stalls, which were allocated to SMEs increasing number of traders in the various cadres within the County."The Small and Medium Enterprises form the backbone of the country’s economy," he said.He urged all the 300 participants picked from Trade associations, universities, Jua Kali artisans small traders and women in business to compete fairly for the support provided through the agreement signed between the Chamber of Commerce -Mombasa branch and the world SME and the other one between chambers and KOUNTABLE who all seek to uplift SMEs through capacity building programs and funding."Successful SMEs will enhance our revenue collection which is part of the building blocks that will ensure MV2035 is actualised thus transforming our county into a vibrant regional commercial hub with a high standard of living for its people," noted the governor.
