Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has differed with Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro over the establishment of a dry port in Eldoret Town, Uasin Gishu County.
The setting up of the dry port to clear transit goods is aimed at decongesting the Mombasa Port.
Joho termed the plan as a scheme to move key port services from Mombasa to Eldoret.
“We will not tire from opposing any move aimed to take away port business from Mombasa to Eldoret. The dry port is a scheme to rob the Mombasa port of key services,” said Joho, as quoted by The Standard.
Mung’aro, however, rubbished the claims saying Joho was only afraid of losing his Container Freight Service (CFS) businesses.
"I don’t understand why Joho is complaining now. He may only be defending his own businesses,” said Mung’aro.
On his part, Container Freight Station (CFS) Association Chief executive officer Mr Nzeki Daniel said the association’s members were not opposed to the idea of setting up a dry port in Eldoret.
“The dry ports have been there except that cargo will be moved by the Standard Gauge Railway. We are not opposed to any new business environment because we are ready for challenges in the market,” said Mr Nzeki.
