Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Senator Omar Hassan on Monday joined lawyers to protest the killing of human rights lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and a taxi driver, Joseph Muiruri.
The two political leaders led hundreds of lawyers, rights activists and religious leaders carrying placards demanding the end to extra-judicial killings.
Governor Joho and Senator Hassan called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to take action against the police who allegedly committed the crime.
“No class or sector of society is safe from the mystery killings. It is unfortunate that there are people who feel they are above the law, we can have divergent views but let us respect human dignity,” said Governor Joho.
“We cannot live in a kangaroo and a banana republic where there is no law, and that is why we are saying that President Uhuru Kenyatta must now sack some of these people, some of them must be charged with negligence,” said Senator Omar.
In the Mombasa and Malindi protests, families and relatives of local residents missing from February 2, 2014 when police raided Musa Mosque and arrested dozens also joined in demanding justice.
The families demanded for a public inquiry into the killings and those that have taken place previously in the region.
In Malindi, the protests against extra-judicial killings were led by the local Law Society of Kenya official Kimani Gicharu.
Similar protests were held in Voi and Wundanyi where lawyers boycotted courts to protest the kidnap and murder of the lawyer.
