Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has accused Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho of sabotaging his campaigns ahead of the August polls.
Awiti is seeking to unseat governor Joho on a Vibrant Democratic Party ticket.
Speaking on Sunday, the lawmaker claimed that Joho was blocking him from erecting campaign billboards in the County, describing the County Chief as "a dictator."
"Joho is displaying dictatorial tendencies, which have been the hallmark of his leadership during the past four and a half years. Mombasa is not a Sultanate and we shall therefore not allow old school tactics, which marked [former] President Daniel Moi's era," he said.
"We are raising this matter because we have information that the advertising companies have been paying money to individuals in the county government so as to seek favours in return," he added.
Awiti's claims were reiterated by gubernatorial hopeful Suleiman Shabhal, who is vying on a Jubilee Party ticket.
