Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s re-election bid has received another major boost after the Amani National Congress (ANC) party under the leadership of Musalia Mudavadi, agreed to back his candidature.
ANC national chairman Kelvin Lunani said the political outfit resolved to back Joho because they believe he will fight for the rights of the Luhya community if he is re-elected on Tuesday. The community, however, demanded respect and a bigger stake in Joho’s administration in return.“In the spirit of brotherhood, we expected them to preserve a single constituency for us, they didn't. We now demand Nyali,” said Lunani. Earlier, Lunani had stated that the governor aspirant who will be endorsed by Luhyas should preserve four senior posts for the community, adding that the demands shouldn’t be difficult to meet. “The community, whose interest is being represented by ANC, has about 40,000 votes. We cannot just be wished away,” he added.Joho’s main rivals in the race include Jubilee’s Suleiman Shahbal, Nyali MP Hezron Awiti (VDP) and Senator Hassan Omar of Wiper.
