Among discussion held between the county chief and representatives from the European country was the development of an industry to help purify water in Mombasa for domestic use.

The former Kisauni MP held talks with the Secretary of State of the Spanish Government, Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Environment Maria Garcia and the Director General for Water Liana in the Spanish capital, Madrid.

"We held discussions centered on the progress we have made towards the development of the first mega water desalination plant in East Africa with a production capacity of 100,000 M3," Joho said after meeting.

"This will supplement the bulk water supply from the proposed Mwache Dam project. Spain is one of the leading countries globally with sustainable desalination technologies."

Mombasa county, despite being near one of the world's largest water sources, the Indian Ocean, faces a prolonged water problem because of the absence of a plant to desalinate the salty Ocean water.

"We are optimistic that this desalination project will unlock the renaissance of socio-economic transformation in the Port City of Mombasa by ensuring availability of adequate and reliable fresh water for both domestic and industrial consumption," the county chief said.
