Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has pledged to settle a Sh2.1 million medical bill for a gang rape survivor.

The 23-year-old woman was raped by an unidentified gang, who later tied her on a railway truck where she was ran over by a train.

Addressing members of the public at Maunguja polytechnic in Kisauni during the International Women’s Day celebrations, Joho directed his county officials to pay Aga Khan Hospital the outstanding bill.

The governor condemned the persons behind the henious act, adding that the woman needs immediate assistance. 

“The county government is for the people. Leaders have asked the county to intervene in this case. I stand before you to make a directive to the county officials to ensure that her hospital bill is cleared and she gets a proper home,” said Joho, as quoted by Baraka FM.

Joho visited the lady in hospital on Thursday and lauded her for not allowing the incident to determine her self worth.

"Her deep optimism in life has touched my heart and many of those who know her plight," said Joho in a facebook post.

"I have instructed the Department of Gender and the Civil society to continue working close with police and ensure the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice," he added.

Different leaders including MPs Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni), Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir (Mvita), Badi Twalib (Jomvu) and Mombasa Women Representative Mishi Mboko have all agreed to contribute Sh100, 000 each to enable the victim start a business once she recuperates.
