An association of tuk-tuk operators in Mombasa has opposed a decision by the county government of Mombasa to suspend the registration of new tuk-tuks in the coastal city.
The county government through Communications Director Richard Chacha three days ago said there will be no more registration of tuk-tuks in the county as the devolved unit moves to streamline its transport sector.
"The measures are painful but in the long run it will be helpful," Chacha said as quoted by Business Daily.
The three-wheeled automobiles are common in Mombasa because they are cheap and because of their ability to maneuver during traffic jams.
But on Thursday, Mombasa Tuk Tuk Owners Association said the ban will affect many businesses as it is against Governor Hassan Joho's efforts to support the Small and Medium Enterprises in the county.
Through its chairman, Obed Muruli, the association said the decision was made without consulting the operators. He said they will hold a meeting to chat a way forward.
"No one was consulted, we will seek an audience with the governor," Muruli said.
The suspension was effected following a letter was written by Joho to the County Chief Executive in charge of Transport Taufiq Balala on January 8.
Muruli said there over 600 business people who wanted to register tuk tuks but could not because of the ban.
