Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has called on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy Willliam Ruto to walk the talk on the fight against narcotics in the country.
In his Tuesday’s response to the viral drug trafficking debate, a visibly irritated Governor Joho said the tact on the drug issue had been turned political.
“When we started campaigns for the post of governor in 2013, the biggest campaign agenda against me was the issue of narcotics” Joho stated adding that he was not surprised that the issue had been re-introduced ahead of the August 8 poll.
Joho, who is also ODM deputy party leader termed recent remarks by President Kenyatta and DP Ruto during their Coast tour as reckless and incencere.
He said that the war on drug abuse both in usage and trafficking should be dealt with in a serious way.
“If they mean business, they should clean up their own houses first”, he said.
During Jubilee’s voter mobilization drive at the Coast, Deputy President reiterated earlier remarks by his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta that drug barons had no space in Kenya.
“There’s no option of us contemplating losing this war because it is a war for the future of our country. Those engaging in this business must know the end has come,” Ruto said on Monday.
He added that the war was going to “escalate even more, not because of elections but because it is a justified war.”
However, Joho on Tuesday questioned why the government was giving notices to persons known to drug trafficking instead of arresting them.
The Mombasa governor expressed his disappointment with the “reckless and baseless statements” made by a sitting head of state and his deputy.
He said terming Mombasa as a harbor of drugs would spoil tourism fortunes that the county has been looking up to after surgery from terrorism and insecurity concerns.
