Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has unveiled MV Mombasa 001, a vessel that will enable fishermen in the county exploit deep marine fishing.
Speaking in Mombasa on Thursday shortly after launching the vessel, Joho announced that his government seeks to acquire 14 more vessels, which will be distributed to all the six sub-counties.
"This vessel will enable fishermen venture into deep sea fishing. Before this, our fishermen have been depending on dugout canoes which are so limiting. This project has been executed through our partnership with KCB," he said.
"The county targets to have 14 of such vessels spread across our six sub-counties. We are working towards improving the fish market and value addition. I acknowledge the fact that the boat was fully constructed locally hence providing source of employment to the youth," he added.
Joho further asserted his administration's commitment to supporting fishermen with modern technology to help exploit the blue economy.
