Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has been accused of causing tension in the coastal city by making unsubstantiated statements against the government.

Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki said the governor's trend of making sensational claims is not good for the security of the county, considering it is an electioneering period.

Achoki claimed that the ODM deputy party leader is out to create tension in the county ahead of the August polls.

This comes barely two days after Joho claimed that the security apparatus in the county is planning to elimate him and other opposition leaders in the region.

"Some of these statements, when they are made like that in public, are meant to create unnecessary tension. There is no government which can sit down and plan to elimate leaders. Those statements are not true," said Achoki in Mombasa in Wednesday.

Joho has been at loggerheads with the county security committee following the withdrawal of his security detail.

He later rejected the officers after they were reinstated, saying they were sent to spy on him and plant illegal substances in his house.
