Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has put President Uhuru Kenyatta's government on notice.
Joho accused Uhuru’s administration of perpetuating the culture of impunity and dictatorship.
Speaking to journalists in Mombasa Town on Monday, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader accused the State of undermining the constitution and democratic principles that govern the country.
While condemning the arrest of NASA strategist David Ndii, Joho said the Jubilee government is taking the route of a dictatorial system of governance.
He said Uhuru's administration has 'given the police leeway to intimidate opposition leaders through un-warranted arrests'.
The vocal Mombasa governor asked the Jubilee government to respect the constitution, arguing that Kenya is not a banana republic.
"It is time the Jubilee government realised the country is governed by laws and that Kenyans will not accept to be ruled by people who perpetuate tyranny of dictatorship,” said Joho.
Joho, who is serving his second term as Mombasa governor asked Uhuru to use his powers in uniting the country and not intimidating people who are opposed to his style of leadership.
The county boss said the opposition will continue to fight for the rule of law and adherence to the constitution.
Ndii was arrested on Sunday at Leopards Beach in Diani, Kwale County.
His arrest elicited condemnation from opposition leaders and a section of Kenyans.
The NASA strategist was however released on Monday evening following the intervention of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko.
