Joho has been linked with a possible running mate position should Raila opt out of Cord and run on the ODM ticket in the 2017 polls.

And in an exclusive interview on Tuesday on the phone, North Mugirango MP Charles Geni defended the Mombasa Governor following claims that he was keen on succeeding the former prime minister.

“I don’t think Joho’s recent political fireworks have anything to do with being Raila’s running mate or even the 2022 plans. He only wants Raila to win an election unlike many leaders, which is a good gesture in any political competition,” he said.

“His steady rise should not be misinterpreted as ODM succession politics or anything to do with 2017. We need such selfless leaders if we want Raila to ascend to power and that is what some of us are doing at the grassroots with little resources. He is keen on recapturing his Mombasa governorship seat,” he added.

Geni challenged other opposition leaders to desist from bringing infightings in Cord and instead concentrate on dislodging the Jubilee administration.

“Our main enemy here is Jubilee and not ODM. Let us focus on beating Jubilee and do away with petty infightings,” he said.
