The Judiciary has the onerous responsibility of being the bulwark of the defence of the liberties and the rights of the people, Mombasa Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi has said.

He said the Chief Justice David Maraga had earned the unalloyed respect of the people which is very important in effectively discharging this mandate.

"Just as every other citizen we acknowledge his independence of mind, honesty and integrity, his deep-seated respect for the rule of law, and his abiding belief in the sovereignty of Almighty God as exhibited in his historic Sept. 9th ruling and hope that during his tenure the Judiciary shall grow stronger and steadfast in dispensing justice to the citizens of our country," he said on Wednesday.

Speaking when Maraga paid Governor Ali Joho a courtesy call, Kingi said the County government of Mombasa would remain a genuine partner of the Judiciary in establishing the rule of law as an operating principle for the socioeconomic development and in ensuring that the rights and liberties of the people are protected.

Several county leaders were present after which they accompanied the Chief Justice to the law courts to witness the laying of the foundation for the new Mombasa High Court building.
