Mombasa Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi oversaw the issuance of school bursary cheques for students at Tononoka Hall.
He said the exercise was based on the passion that Governor Ali Hassan Joho has for education and with the desire of the County Government of Mombasa to promote education as a basic right to every student within the county.
The exercise will be running throughout the week even as the DG called on all applicants to pick their cheques at Tononoka Hall.
He noted that the foundation of an ideal society with adequately skilled personnel, capable of bringing holistic development is rooted in sound education and training.
He said that was the reason why the county government of Mombasa has over the years designed and implemented projects like this (mentioned above) to provide the necessary financial support for deserving students for the purpose of advancing their education.
"One of the greatest ways in which we can make a dent on poverty and minimise unemployment is by addressing the challenge of human resource development," he said.
The County Government led by Kingi issued a cheque worth Sh20,000,000 to directly benefit 2,100 students from 73 institutions of higher learning across the country.
"This we believe will be a great boost to these students as they endeavor to acquire skills that would turn them into after sought professionals in their different fields. Our focus is to widen the skill and knowledge base of our youths," Kingi said on Monday.
He indicated the bursary fund should contribute to the achievement of the Global Development Goals and strengthen the fight against poverty, unemployment and social exclusion by providing learners from disadvantaged backgrounds with an opportunity to access education.
"We expect these students, upon graduating to play a significant role in the economic mainstream of the County."
He also urged students who are really deserving the bursaries to always apply whenever the window opens.
"We are committed to removing all barriers of access to higher education by our students. No deserving student shall stay at home due to fee constraints," Kingi said.
