The resignation of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Roselyn Akombe is continuing to elicit mixed reactions from politicians across the country.Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi has also weighed in on the matter, arguing that Akombe’s resignation clearly indicates that the commission is not in a position to conduct free and fair polls contrary to what it has been promising the electorate. Kingi said the Presidential rerun is likely to be nullified considering the latest development in the political arena.“Our supporters know the commission does not have the capacity to hold a credible poll. Her (Akombe) statement shows IEBC will conduct a sham election. It will just be rendered null and void,” said Kingi, as quoted by Kenyans.co.ke.Kingi said Mombasa residents will not take part in the ‘sham’ elections, adding that polling stations will be empty on October 26."We have massive support. The message has been made clear - no reforms no election - and supporters have responded in affirmative,” he said, as quoted by The Star.In her resignation letter, Akombe said she no longer wishes to be part of the commission considering the division among the commissioners.“It has become increasingly difficult to continue attending plenary meetings where commissioners come ready to vote along partisan lines and not to discuss the merit of issues before them,” read her statement in part.
