The August 8 election could spell doom to the political career of Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani, once a close ally of Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
Despite being elected on a Ford Kenya party ticket in 2013, Joho is said to have played a significant role in his election even though the two came from different political parties.
However, the relationship between the two was short-lived as Mwashetani decided to drop the “Joho-project” tag to chart his own political journey as he ditched the Moses Wetangula-led party for Jubilee. And since then, all has not been rosy for the first-timer in parliament.
In February, during the burial of the late Kwale Senator Boy Juma Boy, the attempts by the lawmaker to read the President’s condolence message received hostility as he was booed off the podium.
Sources close to the legislator indicate that he has resorted to door-to-door campaigns in his bid to salvage his political journey in the wake of a looming political showdown.
In a region that is considered an opposition turf, vying on a Jubilee ticket amounts to a political gamble and aware of such, the lawmaker is not leaving anything to chance lest he disappears into political oblivion.
Despite being present in nearly all events that have been presided over by the President in the region, Mwashetani is said to be firmly on the ground doing aggressive campaigns to win a second term in office.
