The county government of Mombasa has accused a section of civil society groups of mudslinging its name using the latest released audit report on usage of funds. According to Mombasa communication director Richard Chacha, a number of activist groups in Mombasa and Nairobi have taken advantage of the financial reports from the office of the Auditor General to solicit for bribes from the county government. Chacha on Monday said the groups have threatened to continue blackmailing the county government if their demands are not met. He, however, maintained that there will be no bribes given out despite the threats.“They sent their emissaries to our staff asking for bribes failure to which they will criticise the government on the report. There will be no bribes because we know our records are straight,” said Chacha, as quoted by the Nation. The report indicated that the county government under the leadership of Governor Hassan Joho has failed to account for Sh23 million used during the international cultural festival. The report also revealed that Sh204 million that was collected from Coast Provincial General Hospital is yet to be accounted for. The civil rights groups and the International Center for Policy and Conflict (ICPC) have been accusing the county government of misappropriating funds at the expense of the common mwananchi.ICPC Executive Director Ndung’u Wainaina claimed that the county government has been running more than 22 different accounts. Chacha asked the groups to conduct their investigations before making the claims. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
