The Mombasa County Government has proposed a Sh10.8 billion budget for the 2017/2018 financial year.
The amount has gone up compared to Sh9.9 billion that is currently being utilised in the 2015/2016 financial year. The Governor Hassan Joho-led government has also increased the recurrent expenditure from Sh6.7 billion to Sh7.5 billion, as outlined in the county's fiscal strategy paper. "The recurrent expenditure takes a huge chunk of the budget...," read a section of the paper published by County Executive Member for Finance Hazel Koitaba, as seen by the Standard. On December 1, 2016, Joho and his deputy Hazel Katana, who defected from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) a few weeks ago, were given an award in recognition of “Growth in Own Source of Revenue” by the Commission on Revenue Allocation.The award saw different governors from all over the nation visiting Mombasa for bench marking.
