The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) says the KCSE certificate that Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has is a forgery.

Knec’s acting Chief Executive, Mercy Gathigia Karogo, in a letter to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Ndegwa Muhoro, said they have established that the copy of results slip presented to the Council for authentication was obtained from a forged document.

“Following your request for verification and confirmation of examination results Joho Hassan Ali results slip as per the letter referenced CID/SEC/4/4/3 dated 25th January, 2017… Joho Hassan Ali did not register nor sat for the year 1992 KCSE examination at Serani Secondary School under index number 160092024," the Knec boss said.

The DCI had requested for verification and confirmation of Governor Joho’s examination results.

The details by Knec indicate that the centre code for Serani Secondary School in 1992 was 16032 and not 160092 as indicated in his documents to the examination council.

Joho says he attended Serani Secondary School where he allegedly scored C+ in KCSE.

“Therefore, the purported copy of the year 1992 KCSE examination results slip presented to Knec for verification purposes, is obtained from a forged document," Karogo said.

This fresh development could open up a criminal liability on the ODM governor, who has engaged President Uhuru Kenyatta in public spats recently.

The revelations by Knec could also mean Joho might be locked out of the August 8 general election, if his University degree certificate are found to be invalid.

Electoral laws dictate that gubernatorial aspirants must have a degree from a recognised university.

Joho last year graduated from Gretsa University in Thika with a degree in Commerce.

He, however, did not attend the graduation ceremony.

Gretsa Vice Chancellor Kuria Thuo confirmed that Joho attained the degree from the institution.

“The Mombasa Governor was a duly registered student who studied Bachelor of Commerce and specialised in human resource management through the distance learning since 2014,” said the VC as reported by the Nation.

“Mr Joho graduated after satisfying the board of examiners and senate, as is a requirement for graduation in all universities.”

This comes at a time when Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’I warned that politicians with fake degrees will not be allowed to take part in the elections.

“There is no human being in his right mind who can fake papers and then ask to lead people,” Matiang’i said on Thursday last week.
