The last journey to salvage Kenya from collapsing has kicked off, Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar has said.

Omar said unless Kenyans unite to vote in a new administration focused at fighting corruption and lowering the cost of living, Kenya may join the world’s list of failed States.

He was speaking at Wiper party headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi when the party issued nomination certificates to aspirants who won in party nominations recently.

“The journey to liberate our nation and revive the Kenyan dream beckons,” he said.

“With our economy in turmoil and the cost of living beyond reach for millions of Kenyans, we must endavour to ensure that we pull together as one nation and one people.”

Kenyans are currently grappling with an unprecedented high cost of living with basic commodity prices hitting a record high.

Maize flour prices have for the last close to two months been retailing at between Sh150 and Sh170 per two-kilogram packet, the highest since independence.

Sugar prices have also been rising with a two-kilogram packet selling at over Sh200, the highest ever.

The government blames the runaway inflation on drought that hit the country late 2016 and early this year.

The opposition, however, blames it on cartels within government hoarding primary products consumed by majority Kenyans.

The government recently opened a window for importing white and yellow maize to cushion the domestic maize shortage which it claims has contributed to high flour prices.

Before the importation window was opened, the Agriculture ministry had released one million 90-kilogram bags of maize from the Strategic Grains Reserve to millers.

Millers purchased only 600,000 bags citing transportation challenges. They said the one million bags were only a drop in the ocean.
