Addressing press at a hotel in Makutano town, Machakos County on Saturday, communication specialist George Njoroge, said journalists based in the regions were the most at risk.

Njoroge said that it was important for all journalists from the region to be well versed with their geographical areas of coverage as a security measure.

“Understanding the coverage area would be a first step of knowing safer areas to relocate to for safety once a journalist sensed danger,” said Njoroge.

The specialist said journalists were first targets in cases of violence more so those handling cameras given that hooligans always want to remain unexposed.

He said most of the regions' infrastructure were in poor state hence limiting movements of most of the journalists who transverse counties within the regions.

Njoroge advised the journalists to be more careful with their phone communications whenever they were in public places to avoid information that would pose them to security threat.

He however encouraged the journalists to join media organisations that agitate for protection of journalists' rights alongside enhanced capacity building.
