Journalists in Nakuru have been challenged to use alternative mediums of communication to highlight cases of violation of human rights.

According to Salome Nduta, a programme officer incharge of protection at the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders in Kenya(NCHRD-K), journalists are human rights defenders  and they play an integral role in bringing into attention cases of human rights violations happening in the society.

“Sometimes stories on human rights violations are not given much prominence compared to political news stories. In some instances, the stories are killed yet many voices need to tell them as possible. Therefore as human rights defenders, journalists need to use alternative mediums such as social media to highlight these violations," Nduta said.

She was speaking on Tuesday during a consultative meeting with human rights defenders drawn from Mid-Rift region in Nakuru.

The protection officer urged the defenders to be more vigilant adding that speaking the truth to the people and standing for what is right in the society will not augur well with those who want people to remain in darkness.

Nduta added: “Improve on your digital security, work as team and get good understanding on your working environment. This will go a long way in improving your safety.”
