The Media Council of Kenya joins journalist across the world today in marking World Press Freedom Day which happens annually on May 3.
The Council will hold the 2016 Journalists’ Convention and the Fifth Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) gala. The event will take place in Nairobi with the Media Council of Kenya taking the opportunity to reward journalists who have excelled in reporting on issues of health, corruption, development as well as those of environment.
The Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA), is the biggest award for journalists in Kenya and has advanced progressively since 2012. The Awards are part of the council’s obligation to encourage high professional standards among journalists.
The 2015 Journalist of the Year Award went to Mohammed Ali and John Allan Namu of KTN. Their winning investigative piece “Paruwanja la Mihadarati” scooped the title. The piece was about drug cartels in the country and execution of police officers, this is according to 2015-newsletter, AJEA 2015 winners.
