Journalists from Machakos, Kajiado, Makueni and Embu Counties were over the weekend trained on media legal frameworks.
Addressing the journalists during the training at Maanzoni Hotel in Athi River, Damas Kiprono, a legal advisor at the Article 19 Organisation said it was prudent for all journalists from the regions to be acquainted to the laws which regulate the industry to avoid legal traps.
"There are lots of laws that regulate the industry which media practitioners should all be aware of so that they do not become victims of circumstances,” said Kiprono.
Kiprono noted that it was in order for journalists to read and understand the constitution to enable them know their rights and privileges just like other Kenyans.
He encouraged them to abide by all laws inclusive of Media Council of Kenya's Laws and Ethics as they undertake their day to day journalistic operations to remain relevant.
The lawyer advised the members of the Fourth Estate to practice with sanity and refrain from unethical practice that may cause them unnecessary problems both legal and social.
He also advised the participants to be cautious of their security at all times arguing that no story is worth a journalist’s life, thereby encouraging them to work closely with their colleagues from other media houses whenever on field as a security measure.
Kiprono told the journalists to be prompt in reporting to relevant authorities any threats, attempts of intimidation or physical abuses by unruly sources whenever they do so in order for speedy intervention to avoid endangering their lives.
