Journalists in Nakuru County have been urged to cover and publish more health-related news stories for them to play an active role in promoting health standards.
This was said on Wednesday by the Nakuru County Chief Health Officer Samuel Mwaura when he addressed journalists in his office on the state of Cholera management in the county.
Mwaura observed that residents of Nakuru, like the rest of other Kenyans, need to be informed and educated on health matters to boost their social and economic wellbeing.
“It is the duty of journalists to cover and publish important news items in society so that members of society can make informed decisions. One of the key areas that journalist ought to concentrate on is health, and I urge members of the press to cover more health related news so that our people can get more awareness on health matters,” said Mwaura.
The county health chief officer further noted that the media in Kenya was leaning more on sensational and political reports, while neglecting objective issues including current trends in health management.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate the media for highlighting the current Cholera disease problem we are encountering in our county, but I also beg to observe that a lot of important issues in health management and trends have been neglected,” he said.
“You should not only aim at picking sensational and political items because they sale fast but consider also other issues that promote the social and economic wellbeing of Kenyans,” added Mwaura.
