Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja has re-established the functioning status of the Voi Wholesale Market along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway Next to Total (Former Caltex) Petrol Station following recommendations in the task force report that was delivered to him on February 5, 2018.

Samboja said the market was constructed and opened by the first Administration of former Governor John Mruttu, but fell short of some of the foundational objectives and was not fully operational.

"In my Manifesto, enterprise development, especially within the micro business sector, was among the key pillars where I pledged that my government will provide an enabling environment and promote enterprises that spur economic growth," he said.

As he officially reopened the market and relocated the traders that were operating in Voi town, Samboja promised that the county government, through the Department of Trade, Tourism and Cooperative development will provide the necessary support to the traders.

"I have personally provided a financial pledge of Kshs. 500,000 to the traders towards their strengthening their business activities and a further Kshs. 100,000 to the Persons With Disabilities group of traders," he said on Tuesday.

The expansion, re-opening of the wholesale and retail market at the strategic location along the highway opens up the area and gives more room for traders to grow their businesses, as well as increase revenue for the county through the associated cess fees and business permit charges.

"My government through the department of Trade, Tourism and Cooperative Development development will ensure our traders receive the necessary market information and linkages."

Samboja said the move would ensure the county is better placed and prepared towards urban growth and development.

"I believe we are moving in the right direction."
