The department issued a notice 13-days ago, warning land rates defaulters.

In a public notice, the department listed the names of the alleged defaulters and the current balance owed to the county government.

"Notice us hereby given to the under listed defaulters of land rates/rents that after expiry of 10 days from the date of this publication, the County Government of Mombasa shall initiate recovery through legal proceedings as provided for under Section 17 of the Rating Act, Cap 267," read part of the notice, dated March 22, 2018.

The county's Lands, Housing and Planning CeC Edward Nyale warned that those who had not paid for land rates in the County should do so before the amnesty period elapses.

However, the defaulters now have a reason to smile after the department issued a notice, saying the amnesty had been extended to April 15, 2018.

"Due to public demand, the Amnesty that was given by Mombasa County Government to pay for Land Rates has been extended to April 15th, 2018!" read a notice by the Mombasa Sub County Administration department, on April 4.

According to records from the Ministry of Lands, over 100,000 plots have been issued with title deeds in Mombasa County.

However, the department said the county's valuation has captured 70,000 only, with over 30,000 plots yet to be registered.
