Few days after the 2017/2018 Financial Year budget was read, announcing a reduction on maize flour, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich says this will be a reality in the next one week.

He said maize flour prices will now reduce from Sh140 per 2kg packet, to Sh115, making it affordable for Ugali 'lovers'.

Rotich said the government wants to see the budget he read before the National Assembly last week take effect immediately, to alleviate Kenyans the heavy burden, of high prices on basic products.

This is after the government ordered the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to release one million bags of maize from the Strategic Reserve to local millers.

Speaking Tuesday, the chairman of the Cereal Millers Association (CMA) Nick Hutchinson said the millers had, had difficulties in getting enough grains in the market since December, hence the need for more.

Addressing the press alongside his Agriculture counterpart Willy Bett, Rotich further indicated the order to import cheaper maize from Mexico and Ethiopia would immediately be gazzetted, so as the product can reach Kenyans, in a month time

The stock would sustain the market maize requirements and lower the prices drastically in the coming weeks as the millers wait for imported maize to arrive in the country early next month.
