The Jubilee Party is has taken a u-turn on matters constitutional amendments demanded by the Opposition NASA and decided to support a number of changes.
Just days after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared winner in the repeat presidential elections, Jubilee Party now says NASA's call for reforms is welcome since it would address the country's current political agitations.
This change in tune is likely to bring to reality the possibilities of changes to the much-acclaimed 2010 Constitution.
Earlier this week, religious leaders under the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) said the country needed a change in law to create the position of Prime Minister with two deputies under him alongside the establishment of the office for leader of opposition.
NCCK Secretary-General Peter Karanja said the additional posts would reduce tensions experienced in the country during elections.
On Friday, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale revealed that Jubilee was ready to support a number of these reforms to address some of the issues raised by the Opposition.
“As Jubilee, we will support a parliamentary process and any amendments to the Constitution that is in the interest of 45 million Kenyans. We cannot change the law to award jobs to a few political elites,” he said as quoted by the Standard.
Jubilee however warned that the amendments should not be introduced to give power to a few individuals.
