Opposition coalition Cord has accused the Jubilee government for colluding with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to secretly and maliciously register voters in Jubilee strongholds ahead of the 2017 polls.

According to reports from Cord, the government through Interior ministry, Huduma Centres and the National Registration Bureau (NRB) has been registering persons secretly.

In a statement by ODM chairman John Mbadi, the three institutions were funding unlawful registration of voters by IEBC, something he warned would bring 'undesired consequences in the days ahead'.

“We demand an explanation from IEBC why the three institutions are involved in the registration of persons... we warn that this segregationist pattern will certainly have undesired consequences in the days ahead. ODM will reserve the right to respond to those consequences to preserve and safeguard democracy and the right of Kenyans of voting age to register as voters and cast their vote in a free and fair poll,” said Mbadi in a statement.

“We also demand to know the role and position of the international community, particularly United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which is known to work closely with and to finance IEBC,” he added.

On Sunday, Cord co-principal Moses Wetangula aired similar fears and accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry of misusing his powers to give Jubilee advantage over the opposition.

“We want to tell the Interior CS that we will impeach him if the trend continues. We will not allow him to use his office to play Jubilee politics,” said Mr Wetang’ula.

The electoral body has however responded to the sentiments and termed them alarmist and baseless, further urging the leaders to provide evidence if their word was true.
