Residents of Kitutu Masaba constituency have lauded the ongoing school lighting programme by Rural Electrification team.
The project has seen more than 100 schools from the region benefit, with many of them using it as an avenue to conduct early morning studies.
They asked the government to extend the programme to village polytechnics, which are in dire need of electricity given the kind of programmes and services they offer to students.
On Wednesday, scholar Prof Ondigi Abaya said the programme was a huge boost to local schools since it will help improve performances in village schools.
“One of the major contributors to dismal performances in village schools was lack of lighting which made it difficult for teachers to attend early morning lessons. This is because regular school time only is not enough for teachers,” he said.
“This is a massive boost to education sector and I really thank the government for its dedication to support such an initiative. But the same should be extended to village polys,” Ondigi said.
The don asked the government to implement the laptop promise which was Jubilee’s main campaign agenda in the 2013 general election.
“The government should consider implementing the laptop programmes to run concurrently with electrification programmes. This will make it possible for pupils to use laptops with much ease,” he said.
