A section of leaders drawn from ruling Jubilee party have questioned in the manner which the state used police to unleash terror on civilians during Friday’s return of Raila Odinga.
At a funeral in Nyeri on Saturday, a defiant President Uhuru Kenyatta vowed to deal with opposition supporters who are allegedly causing havoc.
“The government has lost sight that it should protect her people. They should have let the people receive their leader. We are a democratic state,” said Zedekiah Bundotich, a close ally of DP William Ruto.
At least five people died on Friday as police confronted opposition supporters in running battles when they went to welcome Odinga after 10 days out of the country.
Prior to the chaos which NASA say was instigated by the police, Joshua Kutuny had warned the police against provoking NASA supporters.
“Give Raila enough security and allow him to do his rallies. It will cost the government nothing,” Kutuny, who is also Cherangany MP, said.
Pictures circulating online showed police officers throwing stones on vehicles believed to be those of opposition leaders.
