Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren now says it is Kenyans who have a final say on whether there should be a referendum to change the constitution or not.
Addressing a media briefing in Eldoret town on Monday, Tiren said as elected leaders, they should be listening to what Kenyans view is on the matter.
The Jubilee MP who was recently branded as a rebel following Parliamentary Committee leadership row further noted that there was nothing wrong for a referendum to be held as long as it is the wishes of Kenyans.
“We represent the people and if they say there should be a referendum then who are we to go against their wishes?” noted the vocal MP.
“There is always public participation forums across the country meant to hear out what Kenyans view is on various issues and at the end, we give them priority, this should be the case with these referendum talks,” he added.
There have been differences between the Jubilee leaders and those in the opposition over the referendum call with the Deputy President William Ruto leading a team opposed to calls to change a constitution.
“Even if we amend the Constitution, it should not be for the creation of positions like an executive prime minister. Kenyans have the capacity to elect their leaders, not a few of us sitting in corners over a cup of tea and doing the selection,” said DP Ruto at Moiben constituency on Sunday.
However, a section of opposition leaders seems to be supporting the referendum calls.
