Githunguri MP Njoroge Baiya has laughed off Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) claims that Jubilee government plans to rig the 2017 general elections.
The MP says that Cord’s claims are laughable because they have no truth.
Speaking at Githunguri town on Saturday, the MP instead termed Cord’s claims as malicious.
The MP accused the Raila Odinga led opposition of plotting to engage the Uhuru Kenyatta government in endless propaganda.
“Cord’s agenda is to ensure that Jubilee government does not have time to work for Kenyans and later accuse it of failing to deliver on services,” he said as quoted by the Nation.
Last week Cord management committee led by Siaya senator James Orengo, his Machakos counterpart Johnson Muthama and Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu claimed that the Jubilee government was secretly meeting with the outgoing IEBC commissioner and its secretariat to rig the 2017 polls.
The Cord committee alleged that Deputy President William Ruto has been having secret meetings with the outgoing IEBC commissioners together with ICT CS Joe Mucheru.
Cord also demanded that the procurement process of voting kits and materials be halted until when the new commissioners will be appointed to office.
The Jubilee government refuted the claims accusing the opposition of lacking things to talk about.
National Assembly leader of majority Aden Duale said the government will not engage with the opposition on baseless propaganda.
ICT CS Joe Mucheru also denied and dismissed Cord’s claims terming them as false.
Meanwhile, Baiya has urged youths in the area to register as voters as they wait for the 2017 general elections.
The MP said that registering as voters will give youths and locals opportunity to take part in the forthcoming 2017 polls.
The legislator said that locals will elect the leaders they want if they register as voters.
The lawmaker noted that voter registration is a continuous exercise that is being carried out by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
“I want to appeal to locals and especially youths who have not registered as voters to do so in order to take part in the 2017 polls,” he said.
The MP noted that it is a democratic right for every eligible citizen to register as a voter and take part in elections.
Baiya urged the IEBC to fast track voter registration exercise.
He said that more Kenyans need to register as voters in order to make informed choices during election.
“The IEBC should fast track voter registration as we head to the polls,” he said. The MP also asked the IEBC to sensitize voters on the electoral process.
He noted many Kenyans are not aware of the voting process a move he observed leads to voter apathy.
