Nyamira County Women Representative Jerusha Momanyi has called on Interior CS Fred Matiang’i to ensure parents in the county who will be found forcing girls to undergo Female Genital Mutilation are arrested and prosecuted.
She said strict orders must be given to local chiefs to ensure parents taking their daughters through FGM are dealt with accordingly.
“Matiang’i should ask police officers to ensure parents forcing their daughters to undergo FGM are arrested.
"The practice is illegal and punishable by law and therefore, we must not allow it to take place in deep villages,” she noted.
She said security officers and local chiefs must not condone the illegal practice to take place in their various areas of jurisdiction.
“FGM is taboo which must be eradicated from society by all means. I will traverse the county to ensure no girl child is forced to undergo the painful, illegal procedure,” she noted.
She challenged girls to report their parents to police whenever they may force them to undergo FGM which commonly widespread in rural areas.
