Outgoing Kinango MP Gonzi Rai has decided to hang his political boots after losing his seat in the just-concluded elections.
Rai who represented Kinango for 20 years lost to ODM's Benjamin Tayari who won by a convincing margin after garnering 37,081 votes against his 18,646.The veteran politician first came to parliament in 1992 on a KANU ticket. However, he lost the seat in 1997 to Simeon Mkalla only to recapture it in 2002, and in the process, survived the NARC party wave that swept through the region. In 2007, he defended his seat on a Ford People party ticket and survived the ODM wave in the process. He repeated this success in 2013 when he defended the seat on a TNA party ticket.Though he alleged foul play in the August 8 polls, Rai has said he will not challenge the results in court."I think I received more votes than in all previous elections and I think something wrong may have occurred during the process. However, I will not challenge the results anywhere. The people made their decision and I retire contended,” said Rai as quoted by the Nation.
