President Uhuru Kenyatta has been told to work on leaving a remarkable legacy by preventing the illegal arrest of leaders opposed to the government's position on matters.
Speaking on Saturday outside Muthaiga Police Station where Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter is reportedly being held, Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny has said the arrest of political leaders would leave a bad legacy for President Kenyatta.
Kutuny said it was illegal for the government to arrest leaders due to their opposition to its stand, saying wanton arrests would leave a bad legacy for President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“The world remembers most of the African leaders including Nelson Mandela and Julius Nyerere not based on the kilometres of roads constructed, households connected to electricity and amount of water provided to the people, but for their respect for the rule of law," said Kutuny.
“These are dictatorial tendencies and must not be tolerated. We want the law to be followed. We demand the immediate arrest of Alfred Keter and if there is a case against him he should be produced in court first thing Monday morning,” he added.
Keter was arrested on Friday, together with two others, for allegedly being in possession of fake treasury bills worth Sh633 million, claims that the legislator has refuted.
"Keter was trying to help those who had complaints against CBK in a case that has been on-going for years. Any legislator is allowed to represent the interests of their constituencies; there is nothing criminal about that,” said Kutuny.
Other leaders from Rift Valley including Baringo Senator Gideon Moi have condemned the arrest calling for the lawmaker to be released.
He said if the police have a case against the legislator they should follow the due process and expedite investigations.
