An MP is preparing to introduce a Bill in Parliament that seeks to take the country from a pure presidential system to a parliamentary system.
Tiaty MP Kasait Kamket in the Bill argues that re-introducing the position may help quell political tensions, especially after high voltage presidential elections.
In the Bill, he says a senior presidential candidate who loses during the poll can be appointed Prime Minister and avoid the country from plunging into chaos the way it happened in 2007 and 2017.
Kenya had the Prime Minister's position before independence but the post was scrapped off until 20207 when it was re-introduced following the Post-Election Violence in which over 1,300 people were killed and 650,000 others displaced.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga served at the position in a power-sharing deal with President Mwai Kibaki between 2007 and 2013.
The creation of the position came following mounting international pressure to the Kibaki administration following Raila's rejection of the presidential results which he said had been doctored.
"There is a lot that Kenya can gain from the creation of the Prime Minister's post," Kasiat said in Parliament on Tuesday.
Kasait will, however, have to convince leaders from across the political divide since changing the Constitution requires a referendum for Kenyans to vote.
