The body has been under pressure to quit with the opposition Cord, National Council of Churches and workers union COTU all joining forces to call for its disbandment.

Richard Onyonka of Kitutu Chache South and Jimmy Angwenyi of Kitutu Chache North on Sunday challenged the electoral body to quit for the good of the country.

“I want to put the record clear that IEBC has been under discussion for a longtime and time has come for it to pave way for the good of this nation,” said Mr Onyonka who is one of ODM rebel MPs.

“We heard of chicken gate where Chairperson Isaac Hassan was adversely mentioned and we have also seen them being unable to manage a simple electoral exercise in a constituency. I think to end this unfortunate debate, they should be sent packing,” he added.

Angwenyi on his part said the pressure had been ‘too much’ and challenged them to heed to calls from the church for the sake of avoiding throwing the country into chaos.

“As Jubilee, I want us to go to polls with a trusted referee so that we beat our competitors squarely. This Commission is becoming unpopular and it’s important for them to seek early exit instead of waiting for more pressure. We can constitute a different Commission so that Cord stops making unnecessary noise,” he during Sunday’s event at Nyakeiri.

“We all want free, fair and credible elections. When a constitutional body faces accusations from all quarters, I think it’s important for it to leave office to avoid further unnecessary squabbles among political parties,” he said.

Cord had threatened to storm IEBC offices during its rally on Saturday at Kamukunji grounds as a step towards pushing for removal of the Commission.
