Jubilee Party's Mombasa chapter seems to be crumbling with two major factions emerging as the race to battle Governor Hassan Joho draws closer.
Businessman Suleiman Shahbal is supported by one of the factions.
However, of concern to the party in the Coastal county is that one group has broken away from the party and thrown its weight behind Nyali MP Hezron Awiti who is from the Wiper Party, an affiliate of the opposition NASA coalition.
The pro-Awiti group is mainly composed of the business community and minority tribes in the area including the Somalis who accuse the county government of discriminating them.
According to the Somali community spokesperson Abdub Boru who was speaking at Changamwe, Awiti is the right person to take care of their interests in the cosmopolitan county.
"Joho has not fulfilled the business promises he made in 2013 and we are now approaching the election," Boru said.
Political analysts believe that Joho will have an uphill task to defend his seat as Awiti is already making significant steps in diluting his support base.
