Jubilee Party leadership has rejected Mike Sonko's decision to nominate Miguna Miguna as his deputy.
Moments after Members of County Assembly in Nairobi shut down Governor Sonko's decision to settle on lawyer Miguna Miguna to be Polycarp Igathe's replacement National Assembly leader Aden Duale has also expressed the ruling party's disapproval.
He said the nomination goes against the Political Parties Act and the Governor has to consult President Uhuru Kenyatta before he moves ahead with such a decision.
The party's majority leader in the county assembly Abdi Guyo said on Thursday that the party constitution stipulates he cannot nominate anyone who is not a member of Jubilee.
Miguna Miguna who vied against Sonko as an Independent candidate is yet to clearly respond to Wednesday's nomination by Governor Sonko.
Sonko said Miguna fits the bill constitutionally to deputise him.
Nevertheless, it is important to note that the two are not friends politically. Before, during and after the August 7 general elections, Miguna has been a critic of the governor's leadership approach.
He named him an illiterate person who was not fit to manage the city. But, Sonko once promised to give Miguna a job in 2016, a word that he stayed true to it in his latest move.
That said, Miguna Miguna is still a troubled man. The government affirms that he is a Canadian citizen who must regularize his citizenship documents to fully reclaim his legal identity as a Kenyan. This, however, is a point of contention in the legal circles as interpreters of the law remain divided.
The court ordered the State to facilitate Miguna's return twice, but this has not happened. Instead, the government argues that Miguna's case is "a simple matter" that should be solved by the lawyer himself with no drama as it has been witnessed during his return journeys to the country.
