A Kwale Court on Tuesday nullified Kinondo MCA Juma Maone’s win in the August 8 general election, citing massive irregularities and illegalities. The court ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct a by-election in the ward following the ruling. The election body has been given 30 days to conduct the by-election.Prior to the ruling, Maone had maintained that his win reflected the will of the electorate in the ward. Hamisi Pweza, who had contested for the seat, had moved to court seeking for the nullification of Maone’s win, arguing that they both garnered 2600 votes during the election. In her ruling, Justice Doreen Mulucho annulled the poll results over what she termed as the failure by the Wafula Chebukati-led commission to conduct the elections as outlined in the constitution.Maone was further ordered to pay Pweza and IEBC Sh100,000 each for the costs incurred during the hearing of the case.
